Notes and News – Week of 9/14/2015

ML’s Pieces

Dear Red Lions,

Having Community Night, Friday Game Night, and Llamaland within days apart of each other was almost too much fun.  Seungju Hwang did an excellent job organizing our largest Community Night in the history of TD.  Seniors, Kelly Wu and Paul Steffan, outdid themselves as the master of ceremonies of the evening.  The performances were outstanding and I want to acknowledge the three brave freshman who performed: Ashia Ajani, Yasmin Eriksson, and Matt Thekkethala, who did the first ever stand up comedy routine in the history of the event.  Way to go, Matt!  Please remember that we get to do this again in the spring so there are more chances to sign up and perform.

This week’s “Photo of the Week is, “Uptown Funk,” taken by Robert Kennedy and featuring our very own Squadettes performing at Community Night.

While it rained in New Haven, the skies over Llamaland were sunny and blue.  Yes, this will be the 14th year in a row that the sun has shined on Llamaland!  In case any of you were wondering, the upperclassmen did beat the freshmen in Razzle Dazzle football with the score of 21-7.  Freshman, if you are looking for revenge, please take it out on the other eleven colleges when IMs start this week.  Our Frocos/IM secs are impressed with your enthusiasm, talent, and sportsmanship – love that all star tunnel – so please come out and help us defend our beautiful Tyng Cup.

This coming week will be much quieter so it should be easy to focus on getting your course schedules signed and submitted and first papers and problem sets finished. But Saturday evening will be another TD first – the SAC Courtyard movie night!

Wednesday, September 16, 9:00 pm – Mindfulness Meditation

Our resident fellow David McCormick will again be teaching Mindfulness Meditation on Wednesday evenings.  If you have ever wanted to try out meditation, or are already well practiced, this is your weekly chance to clear your head, bring some peace into your life, and learn to concentrate.  If interested, please email him at david.mccormick@yale.edu.

Saturday 9/19 7:30pm SAC Courtyard Movie (TD Lower Courtyard)

TD’s very first outdoor movie!  SAC will transform our lower courtyard into a magical amphitheater.  Bring your blankets, pillows, and sleeping bags (not furniture) onto the lower courtyard.  This courtyard double bill will feature Finding Nemo (7:30pm) and Shrek (9:30pm).  In case of rain, we will move indoors into the Dining Hall.

Sunday 9/20 11:00am Brunch with Eric Liu TD ‘90

Informal brunch with a TD alum and writer who founded Citizen University.  Liu also served as Deputy Assistant to President Bill Clinton for Domestic Policy at the White House.  For those of you who signed up to have brunch with Eric, please meet in the Thompson Room.

Looking ahead to the following week, please save the dates for these important events:

Friday 9/25 7:30-9:30pm Friday Game Night

Our first Friday Game Night was so much fun that we’ve decided to do this every other Friday and we’re lengthening the session to 9:30pm.  We have lots of table top games to share.  But please feel free to bring your favorite board game along if you wish and come alone or with a friend.

Saturday 9/26 8pm Ian Hendrickson-Smith Band at the Neighborhood Music School

Please join Dr. B for an outing to the Neighborhood Music School – who really are our neighbors – to see renowned saxophonist and flutist, Ian Hendrickson-Smith.  He is currently playing with the Roots as a member of Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show band.  To read more about the event, go here:http://neighborhoodmusicschool.org/calendar/event/2/1126

If you are interested in going, please sign up on this Google Form.  We will randomly select ten students to receive free tickets to the show.  http://goo.gl/forms/JtmCcNo8ke

Without further ado, here is a word from Dean Mahurin…

Dean’s Domain

Excited to – finally! – receive your schedules, and to see which classes remain standing for each of you after the melee of shopping period.

As I am still recovering from the thrills of Llama Land yesterday, today’s literature is a little light verse from the American poet Ogden Nash:

The one-l lama,

He’s a priest.

The two-l llama,

He’s a beast.

And I will bet

A silk pajama

There isn’t any

Three-l lllama.

ACADEMICS

 Course Schedule Deadlines, FINALLY:

Classes of 2019 and 2018- Wednesday, September 16, 5:00 pm

Classes of 2017 and 2016- Thursday, September 17, 5:00 pm

Schedules are handed in to Trish Cawley in the TD Dean’s Office.  The 5:00 p.m. deadline is strictly enforced.  A late schedule incurs a fine of…. surprise! fifty dollars and a late schedule cannot elect any courses CR/D/Fail.

A schedule of 3.0 or 3.5 course credits OR a schedule of 6.0 or 6.5 course credits needs my permission before the schedule is handed in.  Email Trish atpatricia.cawley@yale.edu to schedule an appointment to see me.

I’ll remind you one last time that (1) the program does not check for conflicts in class meeting times (that is every student’s responsibility) and that (2) once you print your final schedule, you cannot reenter the program to make changes and print a different final schedule.  Including or removing a course (after meeting with your adviser, for instance) must be hand written on the printed final schedule itself (in the Include and Remove Sections), and each change must be initialed by your adviser or me before the deadline for handing in the hard copy.

A schedule with a course in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (and also not listed in the Blue Book) or a professional school requires an additional form, which is available in the TD Dean’s Office and at www.yale.edu/sfas/registrar/blue_form.pdf.  Hand in the completed form with the syllabus attached by the deadline for your course schedule.  [Note: SOM courses cannot be added to your schedule through OCS; they must be written by hand in the “include” section on your schedule. The form for SOM courses must be handed in to my office in the first week of shopping period, well before the deadline for your course schedule, because SOM determines its class enrollments well before your schedule is due.]  Courses at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and at a professional school cannot elect the CR/D/Fail option.

When you put a Graduate or Professional School course on your schedule, zero (0) course credits are recorded for the course until you hand in to my office the form for graduate school courses (syllabus attached) and the registrar’s office determines the course credits for that course after that. Some courses earn 1 course credit in Yale College and some earn 0.5 course credits (most commonly in SOM and EPH).

UPCOMING DATES AND DEADLINES

September 15                Student Organization Registration Deadline:
Two registration deadlines for student organizations go into effect this year: September 15, for the fall term, and February 2, for the spring. Registering is straightforward and uses a new, simplified system, and all groups – new and old – need to register with the new system in order to become recognized. Please be sure to meet the registration deadline: if your group misses it, you will need to wait until the next semester to register. To register, visit the new student organizations webpage, where you will also find a list of currently registered groups, information on managing your group, and leadership training opportunities.
September 16              Deadline to apply for a fall term Leave of Absence. See me if you are thinking even mildly about requesting a leave of absence for this fall term.

September 17              Deadline for seniors who wish to file a petition for fall term completion.  See Special Arrangements.

September 25              Last day to withdraw from a course offered in the first half of the term without the course appearing on your transcript
