Notes and News – Week of 10/5/2015

ML’s Pieces

Dear Red Lions,

Coming out of a very soggy and chilly week, we are scheduled to see the return of slightly warmer weather and sunny skies tomorrow. This means it’s time to get back onto the IM fields and help defend the Tyng Cup!  The weekly IM schedule can be found on our TD website.  This week, we especially need all of you to come out for soccer and football!   Dr. B and the boys have put on their cleats and come out for several soccer games and swear that it is FUN and a great way to meet folks in the college.

October is here and Halloween is just weeks away.  I had a great time meeting with both Mott Woolley (TD’s Students Council) and our Student Activities Council (SAC) on the many great events they have planned to celebrate in the college.  And we look forward to our first field trip to NYC to view the off-Broadway production of Hir by Taylor Mac.  The sign up form is now active.

This week’s photo of the week comes from Colleen Coffey and is titled, “Happy Birthday, Evy.”  It is wonderful to see our fresh folk carrying on our special ice cream sundae birthday celebrations.  You can spot the mound of whip cream and ice cream peeking out from the ivy if you look in the lower right hand corner of the photo.  Please keep these wonderful pictures coming!

Here are some other great TD activities for the week:

Friday 10/9 7:30-9:30pm TD Game Night

One of the easiest ways to meet the TD community from the youngest kids up to our super seniors and beyond.  Come back and find out if good will triumph over evil.  Which robot will survive the shark attack or “get bit”?  And will anyone ever beat Ahmad at Bananagrams???  These are just some of the many questions that bring us back together every other Friday night.  Snacks and drinks provided!

Saturday 10/10 11am Brunch with Gabe Ling TD ‘04

Second of our new “Meet the Alum” brunch series for this year. Venture capitalist with General Catalyst, Gabe Ling will dine with students in the Thompson Room to discuss careers in tech and medical sector investing.  We have room for 2 more students to join the brunch, so if you would like to sign up, please go here: http://goo.gl/forms/4BlhCNJKfN

Looking ahead to next week, here are some special events to put on your calendar!

Wednesday 10/14 4:30pm Master’s Tea on Public Service in New Haven

Join Lizzy Carroll, Director of the Education Studies program; Peter Crumlish, Director of Dwight Hall; and Claudia Merson, Director of Public School Partnerships of the Office of New Haven and State Affairs, to learn about the many opportunities that exist for Yale students throughout New Haven.  This is a great opportunity for all TD students, but especially for our freshmen and sophomores to learn about fellowships, internships, and volunteer opportunities sponsored by the university.

Thursday 10/15 5:30pm Mellon Forum Kickoff Dinner

Seniors please come to the TD house to learn about the Mellon Forum!  An intellectually vibrant and supportive space for sharing and learning about one another’s senior essay project.  Students work with graduate student mentors to support students in developing their thesis projects and public presentations.   Facilitated by our own wonderful TD residential fellow, Lanch McCormick.

Sunday 10/18 Field trip to 2pm matinee performance of Hir, by Taylor Mac and produced by Playwrights Horizons

Our first TD field trip of the year to the Big Apple will feature the Playwrights Horizons production of Hir, by Taylor Mac.  This dark comedy exploring themes of non-gender conformity and transgender identity will make us laugh and think hard about the gender conventions and family dynamics we take for granted.  We are offering 15 tickets for the play as well as round trip tickets on the Metro North train.  To enter the lottery to get one of the available tickets for the trip, please go to this form: http://goo.gl/forms/jFxv0qzAyV

Without further ado, here is a word from Dean Mahurin…

Ashe,

ML

Dean’s Domain

From a 1944 letter from the black American writer Richard Wright to the Uruguayan artist (woodcutter!) Antonio Frasconi:

“I hold that, in the last analysis, the artist must bow to the monitor of his own imagination; must be led by the sovereignty of his own impressions and perceptions; must be guided by the tyranny of what troubles and concerns him personally; and that he must learn to trust the impulse, vague and compulsive as it may be, which moves him in the first instance toward expression.  There is no other true path, and the artist owes it to himself and to those who live and breathe with him to render unto reality that which is reality’s.”
