TD Notes and News – Week of 10/3

Head of College’s Pieces

Dear Red Lions,

The midterm Tyng Cup standings are in – and TD is currently in second place!!!  Thanks to our IM secretaries – Briggs Bulkeley, Kaitlin Cardon, and Maraya Keny-Guyer – our TD community is rallying and coming out in full force.  Looks like we are headed for a three-way race for the Tyng between us, Trumbull, and Berkeley so let’s keep up the great energy and bring back the Tyng Cup to TD!  This week’s “photo of the week” shows the impressive turnout we had for IM table tennis a few matches back.  According to Briggs, “I thought we were going to have a forfeit for a second until the class of 2020 rallied quickly during a fire alarm and we were able to field a full team!  Despite all of our regular members being occupied with a whole host of other activities.”  So thanks to our wonderful freshfolk – TD remains undefeated in IM Table Tennis!

As we move into October and enter into a beautiful New England fall, we have a lot of great events coming up including a SAC Smores Night, college paintball trip, and the RH Spooktacular.  I am probably most excited about our first ever TD fall bulb planting party on Friday October 14th from1:30-3:30pm when we will put about 1000 bulbs into the TD courtyard and RH flower beds.  We will need as many TD students as possible to join in the fun!

This week in the TD Common Room, Alanna Pyke TD ’19 and Haylee Kushi ’18 who are with the Association of Native Americans at Yale (ANAAY) are setting up a donation box to collect cold weather supplies to send to indigenous activists in North Dakota.  They have gathered to stop the Dakota Access Pipeline from tunneling underneath the Missouri River – the main source of drinking water for Standing Rock as well as many other Native nations in the area. On Friday, TD sophomore Claudia Mezey will set up a table in the TD Common Room to raffle off 2 tickets for the 5th annual conference, TEDxYale: Mind the Gap, on October 15th (tedxyale.com/2016).

Here are some important events for this week:

Wednesday 10/5 5-6pm Applying to Graduate School Panel (TD House)

Anyone considering graduate study in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences and engineering should attend this highly informative panel.  The office of career services and our graduate affiliates will walk you through everything you need to know to find the right program and understand the components of a graduate school application.

Wednesday 10/5 7-8:30pm Renaming Committee (TD House)

Join Yale Law School Professor John Witt (TD ’94) and the chair of the Committee to Establish Principles on Renaming will be hosting an open forum in TD to discuss the committee’s work and hear your thoughts and opinions on the issue.  The invitation letter from Professor Witt and readings were sent out last week, but I have reattached them to this issue of Notes and News.  Please feel free to attend even if you haven’t had a chance to do all of the readings.

Saturday 10/8 TD Goes to Local Farms (Field Trip)

Yale Dining Services has granted TD 25 seats for this farm tour.  You will assemble at Commons at 8:15am to board buses that will take you on a trip to local farms.  The sign up went live on Sunday so if you missed it you can still sign up through this link.

Saturday 10/8 4:30-6pm Parent’s Weekend Reception (TD House)

We look forward to welcoming your families back to campus.  Please stop by at the TD House for some delicious food and even better company!

Sunday 10/9 12-1:30pm “Meet the Alum” Brunch with David Walek TD ’76 (Thompson Room)

David Walek is a lawyer, entrepreneur, performing artist, and a supporter of non-profit arts and performance. He majored in psychology at Yale and graduated from Harvard Law School in 1980.  He practiced for 30 years in the Boston international law firm Ropes & Gray LLP.  Since the early 1990s David has been involved with Artists for Humanity whose mission is to bridge economic, racial and social divisions by providing under-resources urban youth with the keys to self-sufficiency through paid employment in fine art and design services.  Sign up here if you would like to have brunch with David Walek.

For next week, here are some important dates to note:

Wednesday 10/12 8-9:30pm SAC Smores Night (TD Lower Courtyard)

We are getting our approval from the fire marshall as I type to have an open fire pit in the TD courtyard! Perfect way to spend a fall evening with hot chocolate and apple cider and hot gooey smores!

Friday 10/14 1:30-3:30pm TD Bulb Planting Party (TD Courtyard and RH)

First ever TD fall bulb planting party!  We have about 1000 tulip bulbs that will need to go into the ground before the first frost.  Come for the music, power tools, hot cider and donuts, and of course the amazing TD community!

Sunday 10/16 11:45am-4:45pm Mott Woolley Annual Paintball Trip

Running around through the woods and shooting each other with gobs of paint has been known to help relieve midterm stress.  We will leave from TD at 11:45am to make our 1pm reservation at Extreme Paintball.  The bus should return to the college no later than 4:45pm. To sign up, come to the TD Head of College office during business hours (weekdays from 8:30-5pm) to pay your $10 deposit and sign two waiver forms.  First come first served!

Without further ado, here is a word from Dean Mahurin…

Áshe,

HoC Lui

From “Love Letter to the World,” Frank X Walker

…Our own efforts to mimic your vistas
are what we dare call art and dance,
music and poetry,
architecture and language,
and love.

It is the only thing we have ever gotten right.

We can’t pass the course on humanity
if we keep failing the lessons
on harmony
and until we unlearn fear and hate.

The next meetings of the TD Reading Group will take up the poetry of (Kentuckian!) Frank X. Walker.  Email me to reserve your place in one of the two sessions:

Monday, October 10noon-12:55 p.m.

Tuesday, October 116:30-7:30 p.m.

Both reading groups will take place in the Thompson Room.

Interested in becoming a CCE? The CCE mission is to create a more positive sexual climate on campus. The CCEs themselves are an exceptionally diverse, creative group of students who collaborate with each other and with their own communities to create space—both literally and figuratively—for students to more easily make mindful social and sexual choices. The CCEs also serve as a resource for students who have experienced or heard about sexual misconduct, providing a peer avenue to SHARE, the UWC, Title IX, and the Yale Police. Outside of training periods, the CCEs generally work 5-10 hours per week. They are paid employees of the YCDO. There’s no need for prior experience in sexual violence prevention. The prime qualification for being a CCE is the desire to make Yale a better place; optimism and humor are helpful, too! For more information or to apply, please visit yale.edu/cce. Applications are due October 14, 2016

Looking for other ways to get involved?  The Undergraduate Title IX Advisory Board and the University-Wide Committee on Sexual Misconduct are both looking for a few more members.  Click here to apply now.

The Silver Scholars Program at the Yale School of Management allows students to earn a Yale MBA degree within three years, directly after graduation, spring-boarding them toward their career goals and leadership positions. The program is designed for exceptional students with strong leadership potential.  These students enroll in our full-time MBA program where they make up about 5% of the student body. Rather than the traditional summer MBA internship, Silver Scholars complete a year-long internship, extending their experience to three years.  Yale College graduates are awarded a scholarship that covers the cost of tuition for the first year of the MBA program.  The admissions committee seeks applicants with a combination of intelligence, maturity, and curiosity who aim to be future leadersin their field of interest. Candidates from all majors are welcome to apply; we encourage and enjoy the diversity of interests and backgrounds that our Silver Scholars bring to the MBA class at Yale SOM.

If you would like to speak with an admissions staff member, please email us at mba.admissions@yale.edu to schedule an appointment. You are also always welcome to take part in our campus visit program to learn more about SOM.

The second annual Yale Scientific Biotechnology Fair will be held this October 7th at Sterling Memorial Library and will feature prominent Yale labs as well as major biotechnology companies, including Genentech, D.E. Shaw Research, and MilliporeSigma. The conference will begin at 1:30 with a keynote talk from Dr. Ronald Breaker, followed by open networking sessions. If interested, please respond on our Facebook event here:https://www.facebook.com/events/293423837702305/ and we look forward to seeing you soon!
