Notes and News – Week of 10/26/2015
ML’s Pieces
Dear Red Lions,
Welcome back! I hope all of you had a restful break and are eager to start this week. It has been extremely quiet around here and we’re looking forward to the exciting events this week. If you have been following your Notes and News, you know that this week will be a whirlwind!
We start the week with an IM celebration in the TD Buttery tonight. To get you all in the proper IM spirit, here is the “photo of the week” submitted by David Amanfu. Titled, “Pretty Awesome Win,” David writes: “Here’s a nice shot of TD IMs after we came back to beat Saybrook in coed Football on a last play touchdown AND two point conversion!”
In less than 24 hours, we will be hosting Ambassador Susan Rice, National Security Advisor to President Barack Obama. We have had a phenomenal response to the invitation to dine with Ambassador Rice and I regret that we have such a limited number of seats. Please note that we will also have a spring Chubb event and hope that those of you who were not able to get a seat for the dinner with Ambassador Rice will have another opportunity.
So strap on your seat belts… here is the list of TD events for this week…
10/26 9pm IM Celebration in the TD Buttery
Come to the Buttery for pizza and drinks and see the newly engraved Tyng Cup and our new IM t-shirts modeled by our fabulous IM secretaries: Andrew Stein, Taylor McHugh, Audrey DeVaughn, David Amanfu, Jatiah Holt, and Josh McGilvray.
10/27 Chubb Fellowship Lecture and Dinner with Ambassador Susan Rice
Ambassador Rice’s Chubb lecture is set for 4pm in the Law School auditorium and her dinner will take place later that evening in the TD Dining Hall. Students must be on the guest list to be admitted. All other TD students will be able to dine in any of the other residential colleges. I do apologize for this inconvenience but I hope you agree that the Chubb fellowship is a real honor and privilege for TD.
With the weekend comes Halloween! Please put the following events on your calendars:
Once we bid adieu to Ambassador Rice, we begin the transformation of TD for Halloween!
10/30 3-5pm Pumpkin Carving in the lower courtyard
We supply the pumpkins and tools and you bring the imagination and creativity! Each pumpkin will be lit up and placed in our courtyard for the Halloween weekend. To get you inspired, here is Mateo’s “Soaring Dragon” carved at his friend’s annual “Pumpkin Massacre” party. I hope this will inspire all of you to come out and carve your own pumpkins to decorate the TD courtyard for the holiday weekend.
10/30 5pm Dining Hall Halloween Surprise in the Thompson Room
The Dining Hall staff has a tasty and fun surprise lined up for Friday night’s dinner service! Make sure not to come too late!
10/31 6:30pm Halloween Costume Contest
Come to dinner dressed in your costumes! All of the TD children have been looking forward to sharing their costumes with you and can’t wait to see what all of you are wearing! We will begin judging at 6:30pm so plenty of time to get over to the dining hall.
10/31 7-9pm Rosenfeld Hall Halloween Spooktacular
Following the costume contest, head on over to Rosenfeld Hall and attend the first ever RH Halloween Spooktacular. Our wonderful TD Juniors are showing their community spirit by throwing a party to meet and greet our freshman. But all TD students are welcome to attend.
Without further ado, here is a word from Dean Mahurin…

Dean’s Domain
One of my favorite novels is The Member of the Wedding, by Carson McCullers. It’s deceptively simple – it centers on a twelve-year-old girl who takes (as the title might suggest) something of an overinterest in her older brother’s wedding – but in actuality, it’s super philosophically and existentially rich:
It was the hour when the shapes in the kitchen darkened and voices bloomed. They spoke softly and their voices bloomed like flowers – if sounds can be like flowers and voices bloom. F. Jasmine stood with her hands clapsed behind her head, facing the darkening room. She had the feeling that unknown words were in her throat, and she was ready to speak them. Strange words were flowering in her throat and now was the time for her to name them.”
“This,” she said. “I see a green tree. And to me it is green. And you would call the tree green also. And we would agree on this. But is the color you see as green the same color I see as green? Or say we both call a color black. But how do we know that what you see as black is the same color I see as black?”
Berenice said after a moment: “Those things we just cannot prove.”
D’AUTRE (that’s French for “Other,” folks – I’ve gone fancy on you! Heading suggested by Jingjing Xiao ’18.)

Careers, Life and Yale (CLY)-Humanities in Action Career Workshops Lessons…From, With, and For Yalies. Sunday, November 15, 1:00pm-5:00pm, Whitney Humanities Center
Want insights from amazing alums with fascinating careers that began with Yale degrees in the humanities? Want to learn from them – in a panel format followed by small, themed workshops – in an elegant on-campus setting? With a networking reception to top it off? Register (deadline: October 30) for our 2nd annual Humanities in Action (HIA) workshop on Sunday, November 15th(1-5pm): https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/HIANov15App. Interested? Email Stephen.blum@yale.edu.
For students with a passion for the humanities, our November 15th HIA workshops offer a special opportunity: an afternoon deep dive into a humanities-oriented career think-tank. At our HIA workshops, Yale College and G&P students will learn, debate and brainstorm side-by-side with like-minded, humanities-loving alumni/ae who will describe their career path challenges, and career/life-lessons-learned. Our session kicks-off on Sunday afternoon (11/15) at 1pm with a plenary alumni panel discussion and Q&A followed by smaller, themed, alumni/ae-led workshops. Students and alums will then come back together from the workshops for a networking reception. Our HIA panel and workshops will be truly interactive. Humanities-loving students and alums will grapple with tough questions relating to how careers unfold. Attendees will interact with recent (and not-so-recent) alumni/ae with real-life experiences far beyond Yale’s campus. Afterwards, when the reception is done, via the Careers, Life, and Yale blog (http://careerslifeyale.org/articles-2/) attendees can sustain dialogues and share thoughts with the rest of Yale.
