Notes and News – Week of 10/19/2015

ML’s Pieces

Dear Red Lions,

Despite yesterday’s 15 minutes of snow flurries and today’s very chilly temperatures, we are only going on FALL break this week.  I hope all of you will get some much needed sleep and rest so that you are ready to jump back into your classes and the incredible line up of events in the college when we are back.  It will be the busiest week in the college with our IM celebration in the Buttery, Chubb lecture and dinner with Ambassador Susan Rice, and the awesome Halloween Spooktacular in Rosenfeld Hall.

To get you inspired for the fall, here is this week’s “Photo of the Week” from freshman Emma Chanen, titled “TD Goes to the Yale Farm.”  In the photo with Emma is Rebecca Yan (TD ’19) and Audrey DeVaughn (TD ’17).  As Emma writes, “it was so nice to run into an upperclass TDer I hadn’t met yet.”  I received some great photos this week, including one from Aydin Akyol capturing the surprise birthday party thrown for Sandy Pecht in Entryway G.  So please keep them coming!

I am delighted to announce that our very own TD residential fellow, Dr. David McCormick, is one of four members of the Yale School of Medicine community to be elected to the National Academy of Medicine.  Please join me in sending Prof. McCormick our very good wishes for an honor very well deserved.  We are very fortunate to have him in our college.  He can be reached atDavid.McCormick@yale.edu

Senior Lions, if you have not yet filled out the Mellon forum survey, please do so by 10/22.  Even if you don’t plan to present your senior project until the spring, we need you to fill out the survey so that we have an idea of the number of folks coming to our sessions.  Here is the link to the survey again:

For those of you staying on campus during Fall Break, we are planning a Saturday afternoon trip to Erector Square artist studios as a part of New Haven’s annual City Wide Open Studios.  Formerly the home of the erector set, Erector Square is now one of the main location of artist lofts in the city.  Alsoon Saturday, is the annual  Food Day with an emphasis on food justice and sustainable living on Cross Campus from 11-1pm.  Our own TD Dining Hall will be participating with 20 varieties of our famous “spa water.”

Please do rest because the following week will be incredibly exciting with all of these amazing events:

10/26 9pm IM Celebration in the TD Buttery

Come to the Buttery for pizza and drinks and see the new IM t-shirts designed by our very own Chris Paolini, TD ’17.

10/27 Chubb Fellowship Lecture and Dinner with Ambassador Susan Rice

The response to the news of Ambassador Rice’s upcoming talk at 4pm on 10/27 and dinner in the TD Dining Hall at 7pm has been phenomenal.  In case you have not yet had a chance to sign up for the lottery, here is the link again:

With the weekend comes Halloween!  Please put the following events on your calendars:

10/30 3-5pm Pumpkin Carving in the lower courtyard

We supply the pumpkins and tools and you bring the imagination and creativity!  Each pumpkin will be lit up and placed in our courtyard for the Halloween weekend.  We are looking to see which entryway will have the highest participation.

10/30 5pm Dining Hall Halloween Surprise in the Thompson Room

Our amazing Dining Hall staff has a surprise treat for everyone in the college.  You will certainly love this fun and tasty treat…

10/31 6:30pm Halloween Costume Contest

Come dressed in your fabulous outfits and let the judging begin… no costume will go unrecognized!

10/31 7-9pm Rosenfeld Hall Halloween Spooktacular

Go straight from the Dining Hall to Rosenfeld Hall and attend the first ever RH Halloween Spooktacular. Our wonderful TD Juniors are showing their community spirit by throwing a party to meet and greet our freshman.  Sweet treats and games will be on hand!

Without further ado, here is a word from Dean Mahurin…

Áshe,

ML

Dean’s Domain

From my favorite novel, As I Lay Dying, from my favorite character, Cash Bundren, who muses: “I don’t know if a little music ain’t about the nicest thing a fellow can have.  Seems like when he comes in tired at night, it ain’t nothing could rest him like having a little music played and him resting.”

(Try it with midterm exhaustion, guys.)
