Head of College’s Pieces

Dear Red Lions,

First congratulations to SAC for a great Smores night last week.  We could not have asked for better weather for chocolate and singing!

Many thanks to all the folks who came out to work with our grounds keeping staff to plant 1100 flower bulbs this past Friday afternoon.  Our head groundskeeper, Joseph Signore, told me that he was floored by the large TD turnout and the great energy. Because so many of you came, we finished well ahead of schedule!!!  To show his appreciation he sends in this wonderful “photo of the week” and to quote him, the title is “TD Rocks!”

This Wednesday is the start of Fall break so we have a couple of activities planned for folks who are going to stay in the courtyard.  I am attaching here “Your First Annual Extra-Special Timothy-Dwight-Curated New Haven Fall Break Fun Guide!”put together by one of our TD Community Outreach Aides Jackie Salzinger TD ’18. Scroll to the bottom of this message and you’ll see the attached document.  Happy reading and exploring!

Please note that our Dining Hall will not be open over the break.  Instead, those of you on the Yale meal plan will need to head over to one of the open Dining Halls. Please check the Dining Services schedule for fall break before heading out for food.

Here are some important events for this week:

Monday 10/17 7pm Screening of “That Way Madness Lies (Loria 250)

TD Fellow and Filmmaker, Sandra Luckow, will be showing a rough cut of her new documentary film on mental illness.  Please join the filmmaker in a comment and discussion following the screening.

Thursday 10/20 6pm Pizza Night (TD Buttery)

We are ordering in pizza for folks staying here over break.  Great way to meet TDers from across all four classes!

Friday 10/21 7-9pm Friday Game Night (TD House)

Join the Lui/Balbarin family for the usual board games fun!  We’ll have great snacks on hand to fuel you whether you are trying to build roads or settlements with wood and sheep or trying to out bluff your opponent in games of treachery and deceit.  Just come by and have fun.

When we return from break, we’ll have our first tea of the year on Wednesday October 26th with Brenda Carter who heads up the Reflective Democracy Campaign, an initiative of the Women Donors Network.  Her work is dedicated to increasing opportunities for women and people of color to elected leadership to create a democratic political system that reflects the American electorate.  I will finally announce our Fall Chubb Fellow!  And please look for our traditional Halloween events like TD Pumpkin Carving on Friday October 28th!

Wishing all of you a restful and enjoyable fall break!

And without further ado, here is a word from Dean Mahurin…

Dean’s Domain

“Walking back to his car at the marina on those mornings, he was sometimes surprised to feel that the earth was altered, the crisp air a nice thing to move through, the rustle of oak leaves like a murmuring friend.  For the first time in years he thought about God, who seemed a piggy bank Harmon had stuck up on a shelf and had now brought down to look at with a new considering eye.  He wondered if this was what kids felt like when they smoked pot, or took that drug ectasy.”
