Notes and News - Week of October 16, 2017

October 16, 2017

Dear Red Lions,

I hope many of you were able to attend Bill McKibben’s amazing Chubb fellowship lecture in Woolsey Hall this past week.  We estimated about 1,000 attendees in the first floor of Woolsey!  Many members of 350.org from CT and nearby states were in the audience to hear him speak about the urgent need to mobilize and push for important political changes around the globe to address climate change.  The talk was both sobering and hopeful.

Earlier in the day, Nina Campbell TD ‘18 and Noah Macey TD ‘19 helped to cook and host a wonderful lunch at the Yale farm in honor of Bill McKibben’s visit.

Congratulations to SAC officers, Elayna Garner and Alice Tao (TD ‘2020) for a wonderful fall formal at Olives and Oil!  This was a new venue for TDers and the feedback on the food and music has been extremely positive.  We’ll be posting the event photos later this week!

This Sunday’s first printmaking workshop with artist Karen Dow produced some gorgeous art work.  Please stop by and take a look!  If you’d like to sign up for the next printmaking workshop on Sunday 11/12 please stop into the HoC office!  And if anyone wants to use the printmaking studio over fall break, email Dr. B atvincent.balbarin@yale.edu.  He will be available to help get TDers started.

Fall break starts this Wednesday!  Please note that the TD Dining Hall and the Dean’s Office will be closed.  The Head of College Office will be on limited hours of 10-12pm and 2-4pm with a TD aide at the desk.  The student kitchen is also available over the break through the reservations system.

When we come back, it’ll be the run up to Halloween!  The Peabody Museum will be giving us four tickets to raffle for their annual Costume Party.  If you and your friends would like to go, come to the TD office and fill out a raffle ticket to claim up to all four tickets.  Go here to learn more about the event.

Here are some great events for next week:

Monday 10/23 5-6:30pm “Graduate School 101” (TD House)

Any TDers interested in Graduate School should attend this information panel hosted by the Office of Career Services and with help from our TD Graduate Affiliates.  Even if you are undecided about graduate school you’ll find the session very helpful.  No RSVP needed.  Students are welcome to bring over dinner from the TD Dining Hall.

Friday 10/27 2-5pm  Fall Bulb Planting Party and Pumpkin Carving (TD Courtyard)

Enjoy the New England fall by planting a wide array of flower bulbs or carving a pumpkin!  You can do the traditional Halloween jack-o-lantern or go avant-garde or TD themed.  The choices are endless!  We’ll have hot cider, hot chocolate, and apple cider donut holes for all to enjoy.

Without further ado, here is a word from Dean Mahurin…

Áshe,

HL

SILVER SCHOLARS
The Silver Scholars Program at the Yale School of Management allows students to earn a Yale MBA degree within three years, directly after graduation, spring-boarding them toward their career goals and leadership positions. The program is designed for exceptional students with strong leadership potential.  These students enroll in our full-time MBA program where they make up about 5% of the student body. Rather than the traditional summer MBA internship, Silver Scholars complete a year-long internship, extending their experience to three years.  All Yale College students receive a 50% tuition discount and an application fee waiver.

The admissions committee seeks applicants with a combination of intelligence, maturity, and curiosity who aim to be future leaders in their field of interest. Candidates from all majors are welcome to apply; we enjoy the diversity of interests and backgrounds that Silver Scholars bring to the broader MBA class at Yale SOM.

If you would like to speak with an admissions staff member, please email us at mba.admissions@yale.edu to schedule an appointment.

TOWN HALL SERIES

“The American University in the Twenty-First Century” is a year-long series of Town Hall meetings for Yale students, faculty, and administrators to discuss the challenges in higher education, as the relationship between the university and the broader society has changed over the last generation.  In this Town Hall series, panelists will put recent developments in historical perspective, bringing the challenges into focus and providing a basis for collective problem-solving and action.

The first session on October 30, 4:00, in SSS 114, will be devoted to “Scientific Knowledge in the Public Sphere.”  What are the current challenges to science education? How can scientific knowledge be reintroduced in our public policy debates? What is the future of scientific research, as funding models shift in response to budgetary concerns? What can scholars and universities do to reverse the anti-science trends in the culture at large?

Sponsored by the FAS Senate in conjunction with Yale College, the Graduate School, and the FAS Dean.

CCE APPLICATIONS

Interested in becoming a CCE? The CCE mission is to create a more positive sexual climate on campus. The CCEs themselves are an exceptionally diverse, creative group of students who collaborate with each other and with their own communities to create space—both literally and figuratively—for to make it easier for students to make mindful social and sexual choices. The CCEs also serve as a resource for students who have experienced or heard about sexual misconduct, providing a peer avenue to SHARE, the UWC, Title IX, and the Yale Police. The CCEs are paid employees of the YCDO, working 5-10 hours per week with longer hours during training periods.  There’s no need for prior experience in sexual violence prevention. The prime qualification for being a CCE is the desire to make Yale a better place; optimism and humor are helpful, too! For more information or to apply, please visit yale.edu/cce. Applications are due October 17, 2017
