TD Notes and News – Week of 10/10

Head of College’s Pieces

Dear Red Lions,

I hope many of you enjoyed family weekend and took advantage of the many amazing shows and lectures that happened across campus.  I know from speaking to many TDers involved in these shows that they have worked hard on their performances and made sure to make all of our visitors feel welcomed.

We were very fortunate to be able to join in the Dining Services Local Farms tour.  This week’s “photo of the week” taken by TD senior Natalia Salinas is titled “TD Goes to Local Farms”.  You can see a very happy and well fed group of Red Lions at Rose’s Berry Farm in Glastonbury, CT after a very delicious farm breakfast, hay ride, and raspberry picking excursion.

And I couldn’t resist putting in this great photo of TD senior Mevlut Ikiz with my 10 year old, Octavio Balbarin, at High Hill Orchard in Meriden, CT.  The two showed some great team work climbing up an apple tree to pick apples to toss down to TDers waiting on the ground.  These two worked together to fill 3 bags of apples!

To keep in the farming spirit, I hope to get as many TDers as possible to come out for ourfirst ever TD fall bulb planting party on Friday October 14th from 1:30-3:30pmwhen we will put about 1000 tulip bulbs into the TD courtyard and RH flower beds. The Yale grounds keeping staff will be here with power augers and hand tools to help us get all of these bulbs into the ground.  Safety goggles and gloves will be provided. Of course, as you’ve all come to expect from TD events we will have wonderful drinks and snacks– hot apple cider, hot chocolate, and apple cider donuts.

Here are some important events for this week:

Wednesday 10/12 8-9:30pm SAC Smores Night (TD Lower Courtyard)

Enjoy a lovely fall evening with hot chocolate and apple cider and hot gooey smores!  We will have a warm and cozy fire pit in the TD courtyard.

Friday 10/14 1:30-3:30pm TD Bulb Planting Party (TD Courtyard and RH)

First ever TD fall bulb planting party!  We have about 1000 tulip bulbs that will need to go into the ground before the first frost.  Come for the music, power tools, hot cider and donuts, and of course the amazing TD community.  You just need to wear closed toe shoes and you’ll be good to go!

Sunday 10/16 11:45am-4:45pm Mott Woolley Annual Paintball Trip

The much awaited Mott paintball trip is back!  If you want to go on the trip, come to the TD office to sign up.  You’ll  have to complete two waivers and put down your $10 deposit.  We will leave from TD at 11:45am to make our 1pm reservation at Extreme Paintball.  The bus should return to the college no later than 4:45pm.

Next week, will be a very light week because of Fall break, but here is a good event to consider:

Monday 10/17 7pm Screening of “That Way Madness Lies (Loria 250)

TD Fellow and Filmmaker, Sandra Luckow, will be showing a rough cut of her new documentary film on mental illness.  Please join the filmmaker in a comment and discussion following the screening.

Without further ado, here is a word from Dean Mahurin…

In honor of family weekend, another bit of verse from Frank X Walker:

“often times

parents

mamas and papas

at that fork in the road

grab on to their end

like the smallest part

of the wishbone

close their eyes

…and

snap”

(from “Wishbone”)

Interested in becoming a CCE? The CCE mission is to create a more positive sexual climate on campus. The CCEs themselves are an exceptionally diverse, creative group of students who collaborate with each other and with their own communities to create space—both literally and figuratively—for students to more easily make mindful social and sexual choices. The CCEs also serve as a resource for students who have experienced or heard about sexual misconduct, providing a peer avenue to SHARE, the UWC, Title IX, and the Yale Police. Outside of training periods, the CCEs generally work 5-10 hours per week. They are paid employees of the YCDO. There’s no need for prior experience in sexual violence prevention. The prime qualification for being a CCE is the desire to make Yale a better place; optimism and humor are helpful, too! For more information or to apply, please visit yale.edu/cce. Applications are due October 14, 2016

Looking for other ways to get involved?  The Undergraduate Title IX Advisory Board and the University-Wide Committee on Sexual Misconduct are both looking for a few more members.  Click here to apply now.
