TD Notes and News – Week of 11/7

Head of College’s Pieces

Dear Red Lions,

Now that the Cubs have won the pennant, we can get back to the business of the 2016 election.  It has been a tough and long campaign season, but we are less than 24 hours away from the election!  The New Haven polls open from 6am to 8pm.  Any TD student registered in this city to vote will go to the main branch of the New Haven Library (1 block from TD at 133 Elm St.).  Bring your Yale ID and try to go early to avoid lines!  If you did not get your absentee ballot from your home state and still want to vote, you can go to City Hall (165 Church St.) and register on Election Day.  Happy Voting!

Speaking of politics, I hope you all saw my note regarding the sign-up for the Chubb lecture dinner on November 30th with Ambassador João Vale de Almeida, Head of the Delegation of the European Union to the United Nations in New York since 2015.  We will likely do the lottery drawing this Friday so please click on this link to sign up if you have not done so already and want a shot at going to the dinner.

This week’s “photo of the week” comes from TD resident fellow, Professor David McCormick.  He captured this great scene of folks enjoying soccer in the courtyard during one of our unexpectedly warm spells.

This Friday 11/11 is also Veteran’s Day and the university community is invited to gather on Hewitt Quadrangle/Beinecke Plaza from 12:30-1:30pm to commemorate the day.  Please go //calendar.yale.edu/cal/opa/day/20161111/All/CAL-2c9cb3cc-580cceaf-0158-2bc5fa18-0000205dbedework@yale.edu/&source=gmail&ust=1478964914320000&usg=AFQjCNFDsyXvp4kDqp632gfQ5q4CsX1m9Q" href="http://calendar.yale.edu/cal/opa/day/20161111/All/CAL-2c9cb3cc-580cceaf-0158-2bc5fa18-0000205dbedework@yale.edu/" target="_blank">to this link for more information.

Here are other events for this week:

Thursday 11/10 6pm Meet TD Security Guard Collin Moret (TD Common Room)

Please stop by to say hello to Officer Collin Moret when he will be here to meet many of you and answer questions. This is a great opportunity to meet him and talk over any concerns or thoughts you may have towards security at TD.

Friday 11/11 7:30-9:30pm Friday Game Night (TD House)

More board game fun from building settlements and cities to thrilling spy action.  Come with friends or make new friends and get to know the TD community.

For next week, here are some important dates to note:

Monday 11/14 4:30pm Tea with Hrishikesh Hirway, host of Song Exploder (TD House)

As the host of his popular podcast, Song Exploder, Hirway breaks down musical compositions of all genres and styles from pop/rock to classical music, and television to film soundtracks.  In each episode he takes listeners through the creative process behind song writing and composing and combines interviews with the artists and performers.

Monday 11/17 4:30pm Tea with Jonathan Bailey, “A Conversation on Socially Responsible Investing” (TD House)

Jonathan Bailey has vast experience in the area of sustainable investment and joined FCLT (Focusing Capital on the Long Term) Global from McKinsey & Company’s New York Office where he was an Associate Partner.  At McKinsey, he spearheaded important sustainable investment initiatives.  He previously worked at Vice President Al Gore and David Blood’s sustainable investment fund Generation Investment Management, the World Bank and the Tony Blair Africa Governance Initiative.  This event is co-sponsored with the Dwight Hall Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) Fund at Yale.

Thursday 11/17 4:30pm ”A Night at Hogsmeade” (TD Buttery)

Calling all Harry Potter fans… in anticipation of the new film, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the Buttery and friends will offer chocolate frogs, Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans, and butter beer.  A poll will go out to select the best film to screen.  (My vote would be for the Prisoner of Azkaban.) And feel free to come dressed as your favorite character from the Hogwartsian universe!

Without further ado, here is a word from Dean Mahurin…

Áshe,

HoC Lui

Nothing Gold Can Stay
Robert Frost

Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf,
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day
Nothing gold can stay.
