TD Notes and News – Week of 11/28

Head of College’s Pieces

Dear Red Lions,

Welcome back from Thanksgiving break!  Whether you went up to Cambridge for the historic Harvard-Yale game or went straight home to visit with friends and family, I hope you all got some good rest and food this break.

Our “photo of the week” series is titled “Thanksgiving Break in TD” and shows some of the fun activities we did in the college over the break.  Our family enjoyed a quiet week in TD full of cooking and baking for the big community feast last Thursday as well as played a lot of board games! We also hosted the annual gingerbread house making contest with special guest judge Dean Jonathan Holloway.  You can see the creative results the next time you walk through the Thompson Room.

As we move into the holidays, the TD New Haven Outreach Aides are organizing a TD community service trip this Friday 12/2 to Sunrise Café, an innovative free meal program run by Liberty Community services.  Our TD volunteers will help prepare and serve breakfast in the morning for low-income community patrons.  In addition, we are putting out a call for any TD musicians to join in and share their talents with the Café community.  TDers will meet up in the TD courtyard and depart TD at 7am and return no later than 10am.  To participate, we ask that you sign up here.

We are all looking forward to the our fall Chubb lecture and dinner this Wednesday November 30th with Ambassador João Vale de Almeida, Head of the Delegation of the European Union to the United Nations in New York since 2015.  The talk will be at 4:30pm in the Burke Auditorium in Kroon Hall.  For all TDers coming to the student dinner, please show up at 7pm in the TD dining hall.  Everyone else will need to dine elsewhere for the evening.  Apologies for the inconvenience!

Here are the events for the following week:

Tuesday December 6 4:30pm Tea with Laura Chambers, Peace Corps Chief of Staff (TD House)

Laura Chambers has served as Chief of Staff of the Peace Corps since 2014.  She previously served as a Peace Corps Volunteer from 1984 to 1986 in Senegal, West Africa as a community development volunteer focused on women’s cooperative building.  She has a long career in a range of non-profit organizations including the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), Global AIDS Alliance, and Civic Ventures.  Ms. Chambers has kindly agreed to dine with TD students in the Thompson Room after the tea.  If you’d like to attend, please register through this Google Form.

Thursday December 8 7:30pm TD Community Chamber Orchestra Performance (President’s Room, Schwarzman Center)

Don’t miss this debut of the TD Community Chamber Orchestra!  We will be performing a program of Tchaikovsky, Grieg, and Borodin.  Free and open to the general public so feel free to bring along friends and support your TD musicians!

December 9 TD Holiday Dinner (TD Dining Hall) & Holiday Sing-along (TD House)

Please come to the TD Dining Hall for this year’s festive Holiday Dinner.  Family dinner protocols will be in effect.  As soon as dinner is over, we’ll head back to the house and dust off the old caroling books and sing!  Any pianists who would like to volunteer to accompany us will be greatly welcomed.

December 10 Alvin Ailey (New York City Field Trip)

We are continuing the wonderful tradition of bringing TDers to experience the artistry of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theaters.  This year we’ll attend a 2pm Saturday matinee featuring three pieces: the classic Revelations, Ronald Brown’s Open Door, and Winter in Lisbon featuring the music of Dizzy Gillespie and choreography of Billy Wilson.  25 tickets will be available through lottery.  A separate email will be forthcoming.  For now, please save the date.

December 11 3pm Sunday House Concert with Cellist Angus Fong TD ‘19

Come listen to and support TD sophomore Angus Fong as he performs classics from the cello repertoire.  He will be accompanied on piano by Andrew Jahn.

Without further ado, here is a word from Dean Mahurin…

Áshe,

HoC Lui

Lake Echo, Dear
C.D. Wright
Is the woman in the pool of light
really reading or just staring
at what is written

Is the man walking in the soft rain
naked or is it the rain
that makes his shirt transparent

The boy in the iron cot
is he asleep or still
fingering the springs underneath

Did you honestly believe
three lives could be complete

The bottle of green liquid
on the sill is it real

The bottle on the peeling sill
is it filled with green

Or is the liquid an illusion
of fullness

How summer’s children turn
into fish and rain softens men

How the elements of summer
nights bid us to get down with each other
on the unplaned floor

And this feels painfully beautiful
whether or not
it will change the world one drop

HULT PRIZE

The Hult Prize is the world’s largest student competition for social entrepreneurship - bringing together the brightest minds to solve the world’s most pressing issues. The winner of the Hult Prize will pitch their idea to President Bill Clinton, and receive one million dollars in seed funding to help bring that idea to life. Yale is hosting one of 150 competitions on college campuses around the world, hoping to find a “million-dollar” idea for a social enterprise that could solve the Refugee Crisis (which is the issue targeted in this year’s competition and which was proposed by President Bill Clinton himself).

Competing is super simple - the only commitment is forming a team of 3-4 people, brainstorming an idea with the help of a SOM mentor, and proposing it to a panel of judges on Dec. 9. Then, if you win the Yale competition, you have until March to perfect it before going on to regionals in Boston.

Please feel free to reach out to (sydney.ginsberg@yale.edu)  with any questions at all! For information about our deadlines and to sign up for the competition, visit our website: www.hultprizeat.com/yale
