Notes and News - Week of May 9, 2016

May 9, 2016

Dear Red Lions,

With less than a week left to go, I am so glad that the sun is back!  With warmer and sunnier weather we should be able to make it through to the end of the exam period.

This week’s “photo of the week” is titled “Chicks in the Courtyard” and comes from Audrey DeVaughn TD ’17.

The photo captures her fellow juniors Stephanie Fernandez and Julian Hornik with one of the adorable chicks Octavio brought home over the weekend.  Despite the fact that several TDers tried to bring one home with them we managed to bring back all 7 to his fourth grade classroom this morning.  It was a lot of fun to see so many TDers enjoying the chicks during their 30 minute outings on Saturday and Sunday.

Because this is our last “Notes and News” for the year, I want to take the time to acknowledge two important members of our TD community who are retiring at the end of May.  First, our devoted Operations Manager, Robert Kennedy, has been a tremendous source of good will and behind the scenes care of TD.  In particular, he has been instrumental in the improvements in our underground spaces – the recording studio, student kitchen, and Buttery.  We are also saying goodbye to Gene McCoywho has been an invaluable member of our facilities staff.  As the Facilities Steward, he has been responsible for critical repairs in both TD and our neighbor college across the street. An employee at Yale for 45 years, he will be greatly missed across the entire campus.  We wish them both a happy and healthy retirement!

Speaking of our wonderful staff, I want to give another round of applause to our Dining Hall staff who has worked hard to keep the DH open 24 hours during the reading week/exam period.  I know it’s been challenging at times to work around stressed out and sleep deprived students so we truly thank them for their good care of the Dining Hall and the students.  And everyone loved the hot breakfast to kick off the start of the exam period.  I think we have a new TD tradition!

As you all start packing up and cleaning up your rooms please remember to bring back all dishes, flatware, etc. to the Dining Hall.  There are also black bins out in each entryway and the first floor of Rosenfeld Hall to collect our Dining Hall items.  For large items that need to be discarded – including busted up furniture – please toss them into the dumpster parked outside of the Grove Street Gate.

For the rest of the week, we’ll continue with our 10pm pizza deliveries in the Thompson Room.  Don’t worry we are here for you until the last exam is over!

If I do not get a chance to see all of you before you take off for home or your summer adventures, please have a wonderful summer!
