Notes and News – Week of 3-28

ML’s Pieces

Dear Red Lions,

Welcome back!  I hope all of you managed to get a little bit of rest these last couple of weeks and feel fortified with sleep and food to face down the last few weeks of classes of the semester.

I received a lot of great photos from TDers out and about over spring break.  But I decided to go with an oldie… sent from one of our alums, Joe Laseter TD ’76, after a renovation of the TD buttery.  Pictured on the left, Joe is now an architect living and working in Atlanta, but still retains extremely fond memories of his time in TD and the buttery.  That small renovation turned out to be his first built architectural design project.

He writes, “With funds from the Mott Wooley Council, two friends and I built a stage like the back porch of a house, as well as some furniture and other improvements.  We were not able to finish in time for our graduation in 1976, so we came back after graduation and worked a few weeks.  The grand re-opening party was in December of that year.” That modest project turned out to be an invaluable learning experience for his future career.  When I asked Joe if the old buttery had a kitchen he wrote “[i]n our day there was a small kitchen with a refrigerator, hot plate, and sink.  I think we could make grilled cheese sandwiches and milk shakes.”  I am confident that Joe Laseter and his peers will be thrilled to see the newly renovated buttery now that continues to dish out good cheer with each order of popcorn chicken and fried egg sandwiches.

We are now heading into the spring IM season which means softball, ultimate Frisbee, golf, billards, badminton, soccer, and dodgeball are back!  And new to IMs this year will be a new sport: Spikeball!  I confess to not having any clue about spikeball but I’m sure there are some among you who are aficionados.  But I’m looking forward to badminton and the kids are excited about the return of soccer.  If you’ve not participated before please do.  With the warmer weather and longer days, take some time out to get more active and re-energize. Email TDimsecs@gmail.com to get on the email list for IMs.

Here are important TD events and deadlines for this week:

Monday 3/28 5pm Richter and Bergin Fellowship Applications due!

Hopefully your applications are already in as you read this.  We’ll do our best to announce the recipients by mid-April.

Tuesday 3/29 5:30pm Reception for Shawn Levy TD ’89 (TD House)

I am delighted to co-host this reception in honor of filmmaker Shawn Levy’s work.  We have word from Film Studies that they are offering TD more spots for students to attend.  So if you did not get into the reception the first time, please email me directly.  I will take the first 10 students to respond to this invitation!  All the TDers who were chosen through the earlier lottery for the initial 30 spots were already notified over the break.  In celebration of his work, there will be a free screening of “Night at the Museum” at 7pm in the Whitney Humanities Center.

Friday 4/1 5-9pm TD Pop Up Restaurant (Buttery)

Both 5pm and 7pm seatings are now full.  We are all eagerly awaiting the chance to taste Chef Sem Kroon’s food as he leads the buttery staff to create a three-course fine dining experience.

Here are the important events and deadlines for next week:

Tuesday 4/5 4:30pm A Conversation with Chubb Fellow Paul Simon (Battell)

All tickets for the event are now completely sold out so please do not lose your ticket!  I am not kidding when I say that I have spent part of the spring break fielding emails from prominent folks – on and off campus – asking if they can have an extra ticket for this very eagerly awaited event.

Thursday 4/7 4:30pm Master’s Tea with Sarah Parcak TD ‘01

Meet space archaeologist Sarah Parcak as she discusses her fascinating career!  What started as Llamaland took her to Yale’s Egyptology program and landed her the $1 million TED award.  Ok, may be it didn’t all start with Llamaland, but you’ll get to hear from Dr. Parcak about how she moved beyond academia to participate in a range of media projects that range from BBC programs to her TED talk to get her work out to the broader public.  Please note that Dr. Parcak will also be doing a large public lecture at the Whitney Humanities Center the day before on Wednesday 4/6 at 5pm on her work.

Friday 4/8 1-3pm Mock Interviews conducted by TD Graduate Affiliates (House)

Our wonderful graduate affiliates are available to help TD students prepare for a wide range of interviews – internships, fellowships, and jobs – as you start to make your plans for this spring and beyond.  Students will go through a mock interview and then receive feedback from the graduate affiliate interviewer with advice for future improvement.  Please email our head graduate affiliate Roseanna Sommers at roseanna.sommers@yale.edu to set up your appointment.  We have availability for up to 10 students to participate.

Without further ado, here is a word from Dean Mahurin…

Áshe,

ML

A Major Work

(William Meredith)

Poems are hard to read
Pictures are hard to see
Music is hard to hear
And people are hard to love

But whether from brute need
Or divine energy
At last mind eye and ear
And the great sloth heart will move.
