TD Notes and News – Week of 1/16

Head of College’s Pieces

Dear Red Lions,

Welcome back to TD!  I hope all of you had a terrific break with family and friends and are excited to start the spring 2017 semester!  I also hope many of you made it out to the MLK events yesterday.

It’s been terrific receiving news of everyone’s activities over the long break. Congratulations go to TD seniors Celine Tien and Julien Soros who have been working with a team to develop a reactive short VR movie titled, Pippa’s Pan .  Back in December their film was selected as one of five finalists for the AT&T VR/AR Challenge in Las Vegas and they won third place!  They beat out a number of older and more seasoned competitors!  You can learn more about their cutting edge project here at the AT&T Developer’s webpage.

Over the break, the city began the long awaited project proposed by TD students and administrators back in 2011 to remake the corner of Temple and Wall Streets more pedestrian friendly.  This week’s photo of the week is titled “Safe Streets”.  The project will also include a flashing pedestrian crossing light to help slow traffic at the corner.  Look for a major celebration later this spring.

Please note that several TD fellowships and awards are now live in the Yale Student Grants and Fellowships database.  To access these fellowships please go to the database and type in the fellowship names.

Creative Performing Arts Fellowships Due 1/23/2017

TD Bergin Fellowship for Summer Experience Due 3/29/2017

TD Richter Fellowship for Summer Research Due 3/29/2017

TD Chubb Student Fellowship for Leadership Due 3/29/2017

TD Senior Mellon Research Grant Rolling Deadline

Please note that TD seniors who wish to participate in the Senior Mellon Forum should sign up here for a spring presentation slot.

With everyone busy with shopping period, we only have one event this week.  We will be hosting acclaimed violinst Katie Lansdale in the TD House at 2pm on Sunday for a special recital/workshop titled “Imagining the Americas” that will explore the music of modern composers Aaron Copland and Aaron Jay Kernis.  Our first tea of the semester will take place onWednesday 2/1 at 4:30pm with Simona Petrova, Secretary of the United Nations Chief Executives Board for Coordination.

We are looking for TD students to enter the Final Cut competition hosted by Yale Dining Services.  The final competition is scheduled for Tuesday, February 21, 2017 in Commons Dining Hall from 5-8pm.  However, interested teams must sign up this week to meet the entry deadline.  Anyone interested, should email me directly at mary.lui@yale.edu.

Lastly, the Head of College received mail for some of you over the break.  Please stop by the office to see if we are holding anything for you.  But for future reference, please note that all students should have a US Post Office Box at the Yale Station post office at 206 Elm Street so mail should not be coming straight to the residential colleges.  The small TD office staff simply can’t handle daily mail for all the students in the college.  For more information on campus mail, please go to their webpage.

Without further ado, here is a word from Dean Mahurin…

Áshe,

HoC Lui
