ML’s Pieces

Dear Red Lions,

Happy year of the Monkey!  To start this new year right, here is this week’s photo of the week from Kenny Cheng TD ’19 titled “New Year’s Dim Sum with Lions.”  Pictured are fellow TD freshfolk Zen Tang, Angus Fong, Eugene Lee, Tran Dang, Thomas Zhang, and their friend from Silliman with a red and gold Lion.  They reported enjoying an early celebration at the Great Wall restaurant just two blocks from TD on Whitney Ave.

I am delighted to announce that we will be offering practice mock interviews this Friday 2/12 from 1-3pm.  Since the start of the new semester, the topic of interviews has come up in many of my conversations with TDers in the Dining Hall.  Many of you are on the hunt for jobs, fellowships, and internships for the summer or after graduation.  I have gathered from speaking with many of you that many would welcome the opportunity to hone their interviewing skills.  The interviews will be conducted by our Graduate Affiliates and for any type of internship, fellowship, or job. If you have not had an opportunity to meet our wonderful group of Graduate Affiliates, please go to the TD website and read up on their biographies.  They are graduate students studying in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences as well as the Yale professional schools and have collectively a wide range of professional interviewing experiences.

My Residential Counselor Experience by Kate Martini, Morse College ‘16
“Being a residential counselor in New Haven with Yale Summer Session after my sophomore and junior summers (2014 & 2015) helped to define my time as a student at Yale. The experience renewed my appreciation for Yale; every morning when you walk into the dining hall, you are struck by the excitement that students have for the opportunity to take classes at Yale.  When you get back to the dining hall for dinner after a long day of work or class, you have the opportunity to get to know and learn about a group of counselors and students that you may not have met had you not been a part of Summer Session. Perhaps the most rewarding aspect of being a counselor was helping to run the intramural sports for the summer. After dinner once a week, I would go out to the Crescent Courtyard in front of Morse and Stiles Colleges and play whiffle ball with students. Teaching students about a new sport and simply getting to hang out and learn about the students was an unforgettable experience. As I graduate and move on from Yale, I will always look back on my time as a Summer Session counselor and remember all of the amazing friends that I made and things that I learned without ever leaving the comforts of the place that I am happy to call home.”

Applications for the 2016 STARS Summer Research Program is now available online.  The STARS (Science, Technology and Research Scholars) Program provides students with an integrated experience that includes mentorship, academic support and engagement in original research. STARS identifies and supports students from groups that are underrepresented in the scientific and technological disciplines, and students who come from disadvantaged circumstances, in any of Yale’s natural sciences and engineering majors. Applications are accepted in the spring semester from students who, at the time, are freshmen or sophomores.  During the summer program students conduct full-time research with a faculty mentor in a Yale science laboratory, enroll in SCIE 101, Scientific Research: Process and Presentation, participate in study sessions and journal clubs, and conduct a formal presentation of their summer research. All participants are required to maintain on-campus residency throughout the duration of the program.

Since 1953, The U.S. Grant Foundation has been providing exceptional academic enrichment programs during the summer for middle school students from New Haven public schools. The program gives Yale undergraduates the chance to develop a course to teach and provides local students with an exceptional academic program that expands their academic horizons beyond the classroom. Every year, nine talented undergraduates who are interested in education and committed to the New Haven community are hired to teach a six-week long core course as well as two electives that they have developed. Teachers are paid $3,300 over the course of the summer and the summer 2016 program runs from June 27nd to August 5th. Complete the following application. Applications are due on February 12thhttp://campuspress.yale.edu/usgrant/ or email us at usgrantdirectors@gmail.com.
