Notes and News – Week of 2-29

ML’s Pieces

Dear Red Lions,

Happy leap year!  Here is hoping this extra February day is coming in handy for midterms season.  Or if you don’t need the study time, perhaps the extra 24 hours will bring some of you more rest and sleep!

I hope you have all heard by now that we are hosting our 3rd Chubb Fellow this spring – the acclaimed musician and songwriter Paul Simon.  We expect this event to be extremely popular so we will be reserving a block of seats in the front rows of Battell Chapel for TD students only.  We will begin the ticketing process for those seats early next week.

I have more exciting news to share… on Tuesday March 29th we will also be welcoming back film director Shawn Levy TD ’89 who is most well known for his work on the“Night at the Museum” movies starring Ben Stiller and many Hollywood stars.  The Film Studies and Media program will be presenting its annual award to Shawn Levy for his work.  I will be co-hosting the awards reception in the TD house to begin at 5:30pm that evening.  There will be an opportunity for about 30 TD students to attend.  Please stay tuned for more information on entering the lottery.  The reception will be followed by the7pm screening of the first “Night at the Museum” movie to take place next door in the Whitney Humanities Center auditorium.  The film screening will be open to everyone to attend.

This week’s photo of the week titled “TD Top Chefs” comes from senior Laura Peng who captured the exciting 2nd place finish of our TD team in this year’s Final Cut competition. Congratulations to Kelly Wu ’16, Taylor McHugh ’16, and Sem Kroon ’18!!!  I hope you will look forward to trying their amazing cooking when Sem heads up the “Pop Up Restaurant” in the TD Buttery on Friday 4/1

And calling all Junior Lions!  The junior class will have its “Spring Sing” in the TD Dining Hall on Friday 3/4 from 9 to 11pm.  Your event co-chairs, Nick Kelly and Audrey deVaughn, have spent hours hunting down your pop favorites so come and belt it out – solo, duet, or as a giant group!  We are bringing in the extra fancy pizza from New Haven’s famous Pepe’s Pizza to fuel up for the event!

Without further ado, here is a word from Dean Mahurin…

Áshe,

ML

*****

“I think us here to wonder, myself. To wonder. To ast. And that in wondering bout the big things and asting bout the big things you learn about the little ones, almost by accident. But you never know nothing more about the big things than you start out with. The more I wonder… the more I love.” (Alice Walker, The Color Purple)
