Notes and News – Week of 2-22

ML’s Pieces

Dear Red Lions,

I hope many of you had the opportunity to meet our wonderful Chubb Fellow, former Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta, and his gracious wife, Deni Mineta, when they visited us last week.  At both the Chubb lecture and dinner he emphasized the formative experiences of Japanese American internment in propelling him into public service and supporting the rights of people who have been excluded from mainstream political processes.  During his 21 years in Congress, he either sponsored or co-sponsored 479 bills including the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1991.  He also played a critical role in the passage of the Civil Liberties Act of 1988 that brought about redress for Japanese Americans interned during World War II.  He advised students to build one’s professional career one-step at a time and to take pleasure in the many opportunities that come in one’s lifetime.  As he discussed his path starting as a community activist, then serving on the City Council of San Jose, to assuming the position of mayor, to running for Congress, and then being called by 2 U.S. presidents to serve on their respective cabinets, one can easily see the ways in which he followed his own advice.  Audiences were riveted by his retelling of his experiences on 9/11 particularly his decision to ground all planes in U.S. airspace and work with President George W. Bush to prohibit racial profiling in the government’s response.  It was indeed inspiring and humbling to meet someone who had done so much in a single lifetime and was still far from retiring.  We wish the Minetas well on their next adventures!

This week’s photo of the week comes from Caitlin Cardon ‘19 who snapped this group selfie at the summit of Mt. Snow on this past Saturday’s Mott Woolley ski trip.  Titled “From Beginners to Pros” it captures the wonderful range of TDers from seasoned skiers and snowboarders to newbies who ventured on the trip.  Also pictured from left to right are David Amanfu ’17, co-trip leader Corey Malone-Smolla ’16, Maggie Welborn ’18, co-trip leader Briggs Bulkeley ’19, and Ray Robinson ’18.  Thanks also go to Austin Airhart ’ 17 who generously spent the morning working with all the newcomers to this winter sport.  Thanks to his work, first-timers David and Maggie made it to the summit and skied down not once, but three times!  And special thanks to Mott President Seungju Hwang for helping to organize the trip to Mt. Snow.

I also couldn’t resist putting in the runner up photo from Corey Malone-Smolla taken earlier in the day that captured Katherine Garvey ‘16 and Nick Adeyi ‘19.  You can tell by the smiles in both photos that we had a lot of fun throughout the day!

After so much excitement, this week is going to be much more relaxed.  Here are some important events and deadlines coming up:

Unlike other UN study programs, UNSS takes you beyond a narrow focus on security and diplomacy to investigate development, human rights, humanitarian action, peacekeeping and peacebuilding, environmental, and reform issues. UNSS course work prepares you to understand and engage with contemporary issues, policies, and debates in international affairs. UNSS practicums, not found in any other UN summer program, enable you to gain hands-on experience in the UN system. Visit the UNSS website to learn more about our three different program options as well as the structure of the class, colloquia, and site visits in New York City.
