Notes and News – Week of 2-15

ML’s Pieces

Dear Red Lions,

I hope everyone enjoyed yesterday’s wonderful Valentine’s Day brunch brought to you by our Dining Hall staff.  It’s worthwhile to take a moment and thank them for their service especially on cold wintery days when a hot meal is the best thing anyone can ask for.  They are true champions working through the curve balls that the extreme cold has thrown our way.  You may have noticed the use of paper products in the Dining Hall these last couple of days.  For a change, this is not because you have not been returning TD plates – though we are very low on mugs, so return them – but frozen pipes in the Dining Hall have made dish washing difficult.  So make sure to take time out to show your gratitude for all they do.

Speaking of eating on a cold day, this week’s “photo of the week” titled “Cupcake Love” comes from Rosa Vargas ‘18, one of our three TD Student Kitchen Aides.  She sent in this great photo of this Sunday’s Valentine’s Day cupcake baking class with Katalina from Katalina’s Cupcakes on Whitney.  Their scrumptious creations feature fresh strawberries and raspberries, and chocolates.  I think many consumed theirs on the spot though there were plenty to share with lucky suitemates.  Special thanks also to our two other wonderful aides Lelina Chang ’18 and Mackenzie Mathews ’16 for their assistance in making this first time event a success!

We have two extremely exciting and eagerly awaited events this week – our 2nd Chubb event of this academic year with former Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta and the resurrected TD ski trip!  Here is more info:

Wednesday 2/17 Chubb Fellowship Lecture and Dinner with the Honorable Norman Mineta

Former Secretary of Commerce and Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta will deliver his Chubb lecture, titled “US Security Concerns from Japanese American Internment to 9/11 and ISIL,” at 4:30pm in the Whitney Humanities Center auditorium. The lottery for the dinner is now closed.  Everyone who has been selected should have received a note from Ben Ackerman.

Saturday 2/20 Mott Woolley Trip to Mt Snow

We are off to Mt. Snow in Vermont for our first TD ski trip in years!  The lottery for this has closed.  If you are skiing or snowboarding, you must come into the TD Master’s Office and pay your deposit and sign your trip waiver.  Please email seungju.hwang@yale.edu if you cannot come into the office to make separate payment arrangements.

And here are some great events and important dates for next week:

Monday 2/22 Deadline for submitting TD Day Shirt Designs

You should have all received the call for submissions for design ideas for the new 2016 TD Day shirt.  Please send your submissions to Christopher.paolini@yale.edu by the deadline.

Tuesday 2/23 5:30pm Senior Mellon Forum

We are taking a short break this week to prepare for our Chubb events, but the raucous fun and intellectual conversations will resume.

Friday 2/26  5-9pm Pop Up Restaurant in the TD Buttery

Goodbye fryolator and hello sous vide!  For one night, we are turning the TD Buttery into an upscale fine dining restaurant.  Join our amazing Buttery Staff for a prix fixe, three-course meal.  There will be two seatings at 5pm and 7pm.  Stay tuned for the sign up process.

Without further ado, here is a word from Dean Mahurin…

Áshe,

YALE SUMMER SESSION

Yale Summer Session-Online Courses
Yale Summer Online provides an opportunity for students to continue their studies in the summer through challenging seminars taught online. The courses are developed and taught by Yale faculty, offer Yale College credit, and provide extensive interaction with faculty and peers.  A central component to the learning experience is the live discussion session; our virtual classroom technology allows students to come together “face-to-face” each week and discuss course topics.  Combining our technology with small class sizes (20), students can expect strong personal engagement with faculty through rich conversation and thoughtful feedback.
