Notes and News – Week of 2-1

ML’s Pieces

Dear Red Lions,

We had another fun and raucous TD Community Night this past Wednesday with special guests former TD College Master Jeffrey Brenzel and Dean John Loge.  They sang their classic duet, “Stuff that Works” to great cheers from the upperclassmen. Special thanks to all the performers and our masters of ceremonies for the evening, TD juniors Nat Aramayo and David Amanfu, for their good humor … though I am still explaining the moth joke to my kids!  This week’s “photo of the week” features TD seniors singing Stevie Nicks’s 1975 classic, “Landslide,” reminding us of the many changes that are coming their way…

Now that shopping period is over and we are all getting into the rhythm of the new semester I want to take a moment to welcome back Diane Charney, TD’s writing tutor.  She has been teaching in the French department and Writing Program for the last 32 years and continues to be an energetic teacher for our students.  You may go to this link to make an appointment or simply email her at diane.charney@yale.edu. She has not only helped many students in TD and DS craft stronger essays but also supported aspiring writers to pursue their love of words and language to communicate their stories.  I also want to take a moment to acknowledge the work of our wonderful fall writing tutor, Alison Moncrief-Bromage, who moved seamlessly into her position and worked well with our students this past semester.

Here are our wonderful events for this week:

Tuesday 2/2 5:30pm Mellon Forum Spring Kickoff (TD House)

The last semester of Mellon forum begins again.  Come support your fellow seniors as they share their original research and senior projects.  First meeting will feature Ethiopian food from Lalibela’s.

Thursday 2/4 6-7:30pm TD Sophomore Dinner (TD House)

The TD sophomore committee has come up with a terrific plan to create a more fun and intimate dinner this year featuring appetizers and entrees from Thai Awesome and dessert from our neighbor, Crepe Choupette.  Semi-formal attire is requested.

And here are some great events next week:

Tuesday 2/9 4pm Master’s Tea with Dr. Anna Reisman on “Medicine in the Humanities”

Come meet Dr. Anna Reisman, director of the Medicine in the Humanities program at the Yale School of Medicine.  A physician and published writer (New York Times, Atlantic, and Slate), Dr. Reisman discusses the critical importance of placing medicine and the sciences in a humanistic context.

Wednesday 2/11 6-7:30pm Senior Gift Kickoff (TD House)

We will launch this semester’s senior gift drive with a fun trivia night and arepas from Rubamba!

Friday 2/12 4:30pm Master’s Tea with Award-winning Screenwriter Chris Millis

The author of Small Apartments (2001), Chris Millis adapted his work into a 2012 feature film directed by Jonas Akerlund that stars Billy Crystal, Matt Lucas, James Caan, and many others.  He is currently the Distinguished Visiting Professor and Writer in Residence at Sierra Nevada College in Lake Tahoe.

Without further ado, here is a word from Dean Mahurin…

Áshe,

ML

Dean’s Domain

As ML and I are finishing up freshman fireside chats this week, I offer the second stanza of Oliver Wendell Holmes’s poem “At My Fireside”:

Let not these slow declining days
The rosy light of dawn outlast;
Still round my lonely hearth it plays,
And gilds the east with borrowed rays,
While memory’s mirrored sunset blaze
Flames on the windows of the past.

The Adrian Van Sinderen Book Collecting Prizes for Seniors and Sophomores
In order to encourage undergraduates to collect books, build their own libraries, and read for pleasure and education, Adrian Van Sinderen (YC 1910) established two prizes— one for seniors and one for sophomores— in 1957. The Senior Prize is $1,000, and the Sophomore Prize is $700. For more information, including instructions and the application form, visit yale.edu/printer/vansinderen. Application materials are due by 5 pm on Friday, February 5, 2016. You can view the poster advertising the prizes here.  Selected collections will be examined by appointment before spring vacation. If a collection does not reside at Yale, the student should be prepared to show the judging committee what he or she considers the most significant portion of the collection.
Applications for the 2016 STARS Summer Research Program is now available online.  The STARS (Science, Technology and Research Scholars) Program provides students with an integrated experience that includes mentorship, academic support and engagement in original research. STARS identifies and supports students from groups that are underrepresented in the scientific and technological disciplines, and students who come from disadvantaged circumstances, in any of Yale’s natural sciences and engineering majors. Applications are accepted in the spring semester from students who, at the time, are freshmen or sophomores.  During the summer program students conduct full-time research with a faculty mentor in a Yale science laboratory, enroll in SCIE 101, Scientific Research: Process and Presentation, participate in study sessions and journal clubs, and conduct a formal presentation of their summer research. All participants are required to maintain on-campus residency throughout the duration of the program.

Since 1953, The U.S. Grant Foundation has been providing exceptional academic enrichment programs during the summer for middle school students from New Haven public schools. The program gives Yale undergraduates the chance to develop a course to teach and provides local students with an exceptional academic program that expands their academic horizons beyond the classroom. Every year, nine talented undergraduates who are interested in education and committed to the New Haven community are hired to teach a six-week long core course as well as two electives that they have developed. Teachers are paid $3,300 over the course of the summer and the summer 2016 program runs from June 27nd to August 5th. Complete the following application. Applications are due on February 12th.http://campuspress.yale.edu/usgrant/ or email us at usgrantdirectors@gmail.com.
