TD Notes and News – Week of 12/5

Head of College’s Pieces

Dear Red Lions,

We had a wonderful public service week in the college with the Chubb fellowship lecture and dinner with Ambassador João Vale de Almeida, Head of the Delegation of the European Union to the United Nations.  It was wonderful to see students so engaged with the Ambassador’s comments on the future of the EU and global climate change.  Then on Friday our TD New Haven Outreach Aides organized our first community service trip of the year to Sunrise Café in Wooster Square, operated by Liberty Community Services.  Students helped with the food as well as performed for the café’s clientele.  This “photo of the week” is titled “TDers at Sunrise ” shows many of our TD students and other student volunteers helping out with serving at the café.

This week we are speeding quickly to the end of the semester with Friday as our last day of classes for the fall semester.  TD Dining Hall will begin to stay open 24 hours for studying starting on Sunday 12/11.  This will also be the start of our SAC study breaks.  Look for a full schedule of study breaks for the Reading Week to come out later this week.  For the exam period starting on Friday 12/16, TD will provide 10pm pizza study breaks in the Thompson Room.  We will be working to enforce quiet time for the reading and exam periods in order to make sure all TDers have ample time and space to study and do their best work.

But before you all disappear into papers and exams, please take time to check out the great events we have lined up this last week of classes!

Life Worth Living (HUMS 411)

This Spring 2017 class asks, “What is the good life?”

Course application required; enrollment limited to 60 students (four sections of 15). Preferred application deadline Dec. 23https://goo.gl/forms/iKAJjmWu13ckmbdh1

Decisions will be emailed by Jan. 15

What does it mean for a life to go well? What would it look like for a life to be lived well? In short, what shape would a life worth living take? We will explore these questions through comparative exploration of the shape of the life advocated by several of the world’s normative traditions, both religious and nonreligious. The class will examine concrete instantiations of these traditions through contemporary exemplars drawn from outside the professional religious or philosophical spheres. Readings will be drawn from the founding texts of Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, utilitarianism, and Nietzscheanism.
