TD Notes and News – Week of 12/20

Head of College’s Pieces

Dear Red Lions,

As we begin to say goodbye to the fall semester and look ahead to the spring 2017 semester, I want to flag a few important funding opportunities for TD students that will go live on the Student Fellowships and Grants online system starting in early January.  I suggest taking a look at these opportunities while you are home over break and before the mad rush of the start of the new semester.  For our freshfolk who are new to this online database, please type in the names of the awards and you will see the different funding opportunities.

Creative and Performing Arts Awards in the Residential Colleges

The CPA supports on-campus dramatic, musical, dance, video or film productions, literary publications, and exhibitions in each of Yale’s Residential Colleges.  For guidelines, please go to the CPA site.  The online application goes live on 1/4/2017 and closes on 1/23/2017.

Timothy Dwight College Bergin Fellowship

Established in honor of Thomas Bergin, former head of TD, the fellowship may be awarded to a freshman, sophomore, or junior in TD for a summer experience that may include a summer course study, an internship or a work experience.  The online application goes live on 1/12/2017 and closes on March 28, 2017 at 1pm.

Timothy Dwight Richter Summer Fellowship

Intended solely for the purposes of independent study and research, the Richter fellowship requires applicants to have a clear research agenda that goes beyond mere travel or summer course work.  Creative Projects and group research projects are valid.  The online application goes live on 1/12/2017 and closes on March 28, 2017 at 1pm.

I am also delighted to announce that we are launching a new Timothy Dwight Chubb Student Fellowship this spring to extend the work of the original 1941 gift by Hendon Chubb to encourage and support “students interested in government and public affairs.”  Through the special visiting lecturer series established in 1949, the fund has brought in many impressive visiting lecturers from the world of politics to literary, visual and performing arts.  These speakers have been instrumental in inspiring students in Timothy Dwight College and Yale more broadly to engage in community and public service and develop skills to become the leaders of tomorrow.  In this spirit, this new Timothy Dwight Chubb Student Fellowship is designed to provide equal opportunity for Timothy Dwight students to undertake public service or leadership development in any professional field, though government and public affairs will continue to take priority.  I hope you are all excited about this new funding opportunity.  I will write with more details of this application when we return from the break.

It’s hard to believe from how crowded the TD dining hall has been that we are heading into the last few days of exams!  I know some of you are no doubt tired but you are almost there … the finish line is definitely in sight!  And then you can unplug and head off into the break and get some good rest.

As you get ready to leave campus, please remember that your swipe access to the college will turn off at 12pm on Thursday 12/22.  Please make sure to go through the facilities checklist I sent out on behalf of Jeanne DeChello, our Facilities Supervisor, last week:

  • Remove all bathroom toiletries so the staff may fully clean.
  • Turn off all lights (unplug holiday lights).
  • Unplug TV’s, computers, clocks, radios and other small appliances except for refrigerators.
  • Leave the heat in the on position at #3 on the dial (Facilities will lower the temperature settings while you’re gone).  Kindly remove items stored on top of radiators and move items which are up against radiators which may restrict the flow of heat.
  • Remove all clothing from the laundry rooms.  Anything left will be donated.
  • Remove all trash & recycling from your room to the basement trash rooms.
  • Close all windows.
  • Bicycles should be locked to one of the bike racks – this is essential if we need to plow after a snow storm.  Any bikes left in unauthorized places will be removed.
  • Please take valuable items home.
  • Lock your bedroom and suite doors before leaving.

I am leaving all of you with our last “photo of the week” for 2016.  Its simply “Happy Holidays” and features our 11 year old Lakeland Terrier, Chloe.

Travel safely and have a wonderful break! Dean Mahurin and I look forward to seeing everyone back in the courtyard in the new year!

Áshe,

HoC Lui
