Notes and News – Week of 12-14

ML’s Pieces

Dear Red Lions,

Last Friday was our family’s first holiday dinner in the college and we loved the care and attention our wonderful Dining Hall staff showed to make the evening festive and memorable.  Special thanks also go to the many TD students who came out Wednesday night to decorate the Common Room in time for our holiday dinner.  The post-dinner caroling in the TD house was also a real treat!  This week’s “photo of the week” comes from TD senior, Maria Quinonez, and is titled “TD Carolers.”  Her phone, with the help of David McCormick and Fernanda Ribas TD ‘16, managed to capture the scene of holiday revelry.

TD Seniors please look ahead to your winter schedule and sign up for Mellon Forum presentation.  Even if you did not attend the kickoff event or any of the presentations in the fall, you are very much welcome to join up for the spring.  Please go to this survey and sign up for a presentation time.

We are in full reading period/exam mode!  Everyone should have received my note last night about the implementation of quiet hours from 11pm to 8am every night and the opening of the Dining Hall for studying around the clock.   Please remember that the DH staff asks anyone studying through the night to clean up their areas by 7:30am so that they can begin to prepare for breakfast service.  The DH staff will continue to leave out coffee and hot water for tea and chocolate for the duration of the exam period. Please use the paper goods put out by the staff if you need to take food or beverages out of the Dining Hall.  We are once again running very low on our mugs, little plates, and silverware so please bring back any items you’ve taken out of the Dining Hall.

Everyone should have received my email last night about the different food and non-food study breaks we have planned to get everyone through reading week and exams.

Dean’s Domain

A very slender Dean’s Domain this week…

The Hand (Mary Ruefle)

The teacher asks a question.
You know the answer, you suspect
you are the only one in the classroom
who knows the answer, because the person
in question is yourself, and on that
you are the greatest living authority,
but you don’t raise your hand.
You raise the top of your desk
and take out an apple.
You look out the window.
You don’t raise your hand and there is
some essential beauty in your fingers,
which aren’t even drumming, but lie
flat and peaceful.
The teacher repeats the question.
Outside the window, on an overhanging branch,
a robin is ruffling its feathers
and spring is in the air.
