Notes and News – Week of 4-18

ML’s Pieces

Dear Red Lions,

A giant cheer for our freshfolk who did a great job this weekend under the energetic leadership of Maraya Keny-Guyer and Kaitlin Cardon.  We had one of the largest college contingents for the 10am opening ceremonies – no easy feat considering the freshmen in the other 10 colleges reside in Old Campus and are able to just roll out of bed and into the courtyard!  We started off the day strong winning the balloon popping contest for Frocos and later took 2ndplace in the 3 legged race and 1st place in the eating contest.  If you made it out to the events you would have seen our freshman competing with a lot of heart.  The large number of entries for this week’s “photo of the week” reflects how much fun everyone had.  So instead of picking just one, here are three of the best photos I received capturing the day:

“TD Spirit” from Jemimah Orevaoghene ’19

“Frocos Competition” from Laura Peng ‘16

“TD is the Bestest,” from Katilin Cardon ‘19

And follow this link to see more photos from the day taken by Kaitlin Cardon.

And thanks and congratulations go to SAC and its new president, Jorge Anaya ’19, who did a great job with the TD Twist at Anna Liffey’s Friday night.  The new SAC board is off to a flying start.  They plan to do a water balloon fight with Silliman this Sunday and we are all looking forward to TD Day on Friday 4/29th!

Spring Fling follows TD Day and this year we have 2 entries from TDers – Seungju Hwang ‘17 “Loving Now” andAndrew Evren ‘18 “And So We Rolled” – made possible by our incredible Recording Studio team in the college.  Please go to the Spring Fling polls and put in your vote and support our amazing musicians!  Polls close on Friday so don’t wait too long.

Here are our important TD deadlines and events for this week:

Wednesday 4/20 4:30pm Master’s tea with Award-winning writer Karen Tei Yamashita (TD House)

Karen Tei Yamashita is the author of many books.  Her most recent work, I Hotel, was selected as a finalist for the National Book Award and awarded the California Book Award, the American Book Award, the Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association Award, and the Association for Asian American Studies Book Award.

Thursday 4/21 8pm Yale Symphony Orchestra at Carnegie Hall

The YSO still has discounted tickets. Please go to this link and use the discount (promo) code:  SHI23383 TD is supporting the event by offering free train tickets for 10 students who’d like to attend but need help with the transportation costs.  If you’d like to get a free train ticket, please email karen.mcgovern@yale.edu to let her know.

Friday 4/22 7:30-9:30pm Game Night (TD House)

With all the amazing events we have had this spring, we have not been able to make time for Game Night until now.  Please join us for another fun filled evening of your favorite board games.  As usual, we will have terrific snacks and drinks on hand!

Saturday 4/23 5pm TD Crawfish Boil (TD Courtyard)

Another great TD Mott Woolley tradition!  We fly in crawdads fresh from New Orleans, boil them up and serve with Cajun fixings, including sweet corn and fresh potatoes.  No worries if you do not know how to eat them.  The more seasoned upperclassmen will be more than happy to teach any newbies!

Sunday 4/24 “Meet the Alum” brunch with Stephen Heintz TD ‘74

Sign up here for our last “Meet the Alum” brunch of the year.  Stephen Heintz is currently the president of theRockefeller Brothers Fund, a family foundation that aims to promote “social change that contributes to a more just, sustainable, and peaceful world.”  Prior to joining Rockefeller, he founded Demos, a public policy and advocacy organization working to enhance the vitality of American democracy and promote more broadly shared prosperity. He has also served as the executive vice president and chief operating officer of the EastWest Institute, where he worked on issues of economic reform, civil society development, and international security.

Sunday 4/24 2:30pm SAC Water balloon fight with Silliman (Silliman Courtyard)

Our fun loving SAC board has organized a friendly water balloon fight with our neighbors across the street.  May not seem fair to have salamanders go up against lions, but it will be fun!  Ice cream treats will follow!

Without further ado, here is a word from Dean Mahurin…
