Notes and News – Week of 4-11

ML’s Pieces

Dear Red Lions,

I have not fully come down from the incredible week of programs in the college.  I still cannot believe I had the privilege of meeting Paul Simon and hearing him talk about his songwriting process and love of musical experimentation and sounds. We are so grateful to Emma Simon for sharing her “Uncle Paul” with us.  This week’s “photo of the week” comes from Yale staff photographer Mike Marsland.  A veteran photographer of many special Yale events, he documented the event for our Chubb archives.  He writes: “BTW it was really amazing. It ranks right up there with anything I’ve attended and photographed  at Yale in my 40 years.”

And it’s not everyday that we have a “space archaeologist” hanging out in the Buttery live tweeting as she watches the premier of her latest television show, “Vikings Uncovered.”  Sarah Parcak ’01 was as generous and fun as she was serious about her work.  Her tea was full of incredible warmth and humor as well as thoughtful reflection on the life of a remote sensing archaeological specialist who straddles the worlds of ancient Egyptology, anthropology, and the sciences.  The dinner allowed us to ask more questions about her work as an archaeologist as well as her experiences in TD when she was an undergraduate and aide.

I think this second “photo of the week” taken by TD senior Paul Steffan of Sarah Parcak, clowning around in the TD Buttery with freshmen Jack Brownrigg and Eric Williamson, shows how much her college years meant to her.

You would think after an exciting week of events that we would have a quiet week to recover.  But as you can see below, we are not taking a break.  With only a few weeks left in the semester, we have to pack in our events while we still can!

Tuesday 4/12 5:30-8pm Mega Mellon Finale (TD House)

Last Senior Mellon Forum of the year.  Please support our wonderful presenters and toast the year’s speakers with cake and champagne.

Thursday 4/14 9-11pm Screening of Rudy (Buttery)

Named by ESPN as one of the top 25 most inspirational sports movies of all time, Rudy will inspire our freshfolk to greatness this weekend as they compete against the other colleges.  Come support team captains Maraya Keny-Guyer and Kaitlin Cardon by helping with making posters. Pizza and drinks provided.

Friday 4/15 10pm-1am TD Twist – Timothy Dwight’s Spring Formal (Anna Liffey’s)

TD SAC will be hosting our spring formal at our favorite neighborhood Irish Pub. Free food will be served. And a free drink voucher (beer or wine) will be provided for those above 21. We hope everyone can come!

Saturday 4/16 9:30am Freshman Olympics Pep Rally and Breakfast

This is it… the Frosh Olympics.  The team will gather for bagels and coffee in the courtyard and then march to Old Campus for the opening ceremonies at 10am.  Come back to TD for a special brunch and go back and cheer on our freshman!

Saturday 4/16 11am-1:30pm  Master’s Brunch

Along with the amazing spread we saw in the fall, the TD Dining Hall staff has some special treats planned for this spring’s master brunch, including: omelet/crepe station, dipped white and dark chocolate strawberries, and a ham carving station.  Family dinner protocol will be in effect so all off-campus TDers are welcome.

Sunday 4/17 11:30am-1pm Conversation on Queer Life and Experiences at Yale (Thompson Room)

Please join TD Frocos Andrew Stein and Lynn Kennedy to discuss queer life at Yale.  Whether you identify as LGBTQ or an ally, feel free to come listen, ask questions, or talk about any challenges and/or triumphs you’ve experienced related to gender or sexuality.  The discussion will be geared toward freshmen, but TD upperclassmen are welcome to attend.

Here are our important TD deadlines and events for this week:

Wednesday 4/20 4:30pm Master’s tea with Award-winning writer Karen Tei Yamashita

Karen Tei Yamashita is the author of many books.  Her most recent work, I Hotel, was selected as a finalist for the National Book Award and awarded the California Book Award, the American Book Award, the Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association Award, and the Association for Asian American Studies Book Award.  There will a dinner off-site following the talk at a location to be announced.

Thursday 4/21 8pm Yale Symphony Orchestra at Carnegie Hall

The YSO is offering discounted tickets for their big 50th celebration performance in NYC at the legendary Carnegie Hall.  President Salovey will be speaking before the concert and many Yale officials and alumni will also be in the audience.  Please go to this link if you would like to purchase tickets. Please use the discount (promo) code:  SHI23383 TD will also offer free train tickets for 10 students who’d like to attend but need help with the transportation costs.  If you’d like to get tickets, please email karen.mcgovern@yale.edu to let her know.

Without further ado, here is a word from Dean Mahurin…

Dean’s Domain

From MLK’s final speech, “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” (Memphis, April 3, 1968):
And another reason I’m happy to live in this period is that we have been forced to a point where we are going to have to grapple with the problems that men have been trying to grapple with through history, but the demands didn’t force them to do it. Survival demands that we grapple with them. Men for years now have been talking about war and peace. But now no longer can they just talk about it. It is no longer a choice between violence and nonviolence in this world; it’s nonviolence or nonexistence. That is where we are today. And also, in the human rights revolution, if something isn’t done and done in a hurry to bring the colored peoples of the world out of their long years of poverty; their long years of hurt and neglect, the whole world is doomed. Now I’m just happy that God has allowed me to live in this period, to see what is unfolding.

Community Based Learning at Yale is a Dwight Hall initiative that allows Yale undergraduates and community partners (nonprofits, city agencies, and other groups) to work together to meet both partners’ needs and students’ academic requirements. Instead of a final exam or paper, the CBL program gives students the chance to complete a final project applying their learning to help a community organization. CBL aims to nurture relationships between community partners, Yale undergraduates, and faculty by joining theory taught in the classroom and practical applications in the field.
We are currently recruiting and have both board and member positions available! If you are at all interested, have any questions, or would like to discuss ideas with us, please contact cbl@dwighthall.org or emon.datta@yale.edu. You can also visit our website at cbl.sites.yale.edu
