Notes and News – Week of 9/12

Head of College’s Pieces

Dear Red Lions,

We could not have asked for better pool weather for this Saturday’s outing to Katonah, New York for our legendary Llama Land freshman trip.  Once again, Professor William K. Simpson kindly opened up his home to allow another new group of TD freshman to decompress from the stress of shopping period and just relax and enjoy the day.  This week’s “photo of the week” taken by Froco Nate Romero is simply titled, “Lama Land 2016”.

We are greatly appreciative of the TD Staff and Aides team of upperclassmen who worked hard to make sure to “leave no trace” on this beautiful property.  (If you look carefully at the picture below, you’ll see the llama hanging out in the upper right hand corner of this photo.)

For anyone who needs to find some time to relax after a particularly hectic shopping period, I highly recommend going to TD’s Community Night this Tuesday 9/13, 8-10pm in our Dining Hall.  It’s one of the best events of the year when we gather as a college and cheer one another on as we take to the stage. This year, we have a full line up with many first-timers – even among the senior class!  So this should be a terrific night so come early to grab your seats and don’t forget that we’ll have our traditional pizza intermission.

Speaking of performing, I hope all of you saw the note about the start of the Timothy Dwight College Community Orchestra!  Look to see a performance from this group at Community Night.  Anyone interested in auditioning should go to this form and sign up. Or feel free to contact the organizers, Paul Steffan (paul.steffan@yale.edu) and Kay Nakazawa (kay.nakazawa@yale.edu), if you have any questions.

For this week, here are some important dates to note:

Tuesday 9/12 8-10pm TD Community Night (TD Dining Hall)

Singers, bands, stand-up comedians, poets, etc. are just some of the many wonderful acts you’ll see.  The line up is full, so no more entries.  But there is always the spring Community Night…

Saturday 9/17 11-12:30pm “Meet the Alum” brunch with Dr. Ann Hess TD ’87 (Thompson Room)

TD welcomes back Dr. Ann Hess, who graduated from Yale with a BA in American Studies.  A Marshall Scholar, she completed a PhD at Cambridge University in 17th c. cultural and social history and later attended Harvard Medical School. She is an adult and child psychiatrist-psychotherapist with a teaching appointment at Harvard Medical School (Cambridge Hospital) and a private practice in Newton, MA.  She will be here with her husband, Errol Norwitz (Rhodes Scholar and Chairman of Ob-Gyn at Tufts) and their son.  We have about two spots left for this brunch, if you would like to sign up through this link.

Sunday, September 11, 9:00 pm – Mindfulness Meditation

Our resident fellow David McCormick will be teaching Mindfulness Meditation on Sunday evenings this fall semester.  If you have ever wanted to try out meditation, or are already well practiced, this is your weekly chance to clear your head, bring some peace into your life, and learn to concentrate.  If interested, please email him at david.mccormick@yale.edu.

Looking ahead to next week, here are some events to put on your calendars:

Friday 9/23 12pm Yale Entrepreneurial Institute Lunch (Thompson Room)

If you are interested in social entrepreneurship, entrepreneurship, innovation or are just curious, we will talk you through the amazing resources you can access during your time at Yale. We will cover grant and prize funding opportunities, workshops, classes, programming at Yale Entrepreneurial Institute, Yale Center for Business and Environment, InnovateHealth Yale, and many more resources across the university. Yale student entrepreneurs will also share their experiences navigating their time at Yale!  No sign-up needed, just go to the Thompson Room.  Questions?  Email Kassie.Tucker@yale.edu.

Tuesday 9/27 6-7:30pm Senior Mellon Kickoff Dinner (TD House)

Seniors please come to the TD house to learn about the Mellon Forum!  This is THE space to be in your senior year to share your original research and learn more about the intellectual work of your peers.  We create a vibrant and supportive space full of good food and laughter.  All presenters receive mentoring from our wonderful Graduate Affiliates so you will get a lot of help with your presentations.

Tuesday 9/27 8-9pm Sophomore Advising Event (Dining Hall)

We are starting a new graduate student mentoring program for TD sophomores with the help of ourGraduate Affiliates.  The advising session will provide TD sophomores with an opportunity to meet graduate students in your fields of interest and discuss courses of study or future career questions. We’ll send out more information before the end of the week.

Without further ado, here is a word from Dean Mahurin…

Apply to be a Gallery Guide!
The Gallery Guide program is a paid opportunity for Yale undergraduates to learn about the museum’s collection and how to teach from objects. Students participate in a yearlong training program with education and collections curators, during which they are taught to lead interactive, close-looking tours of the museum for the Yale community and the New Haven public. The in-depth training requires a time commitment similar to that of an academic course. Following the completion of the first year of training, students remain involved with the Gallery Guide program by continuing to give museum tours and participating in weekly gallery sessions throughout their time at Yale.
This is an excellent opportunity for undergraduates to integrate art into their experience at Yale and to become part of the Yale University Art Gallery community. The program is open to freshmen, sophomores, and juniors in Yale College. Students in all majors are encouraged to apply.  Applications are due by midnight on Monday, September 12.  Contact ryan.hill@yale.edu for more details.
